Is gardening safe during pregnancy?

Garden soil can carry the same parasite as cat litter.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Christopher Sterling, obstetrician ·

The short answer

Yes, with gloves. Soil and sandpits can contain toxoplasma from cat faeces, so wear gloves when gardening, wash your hands afterwards, and wash homegrown fruit and vegetables thoroughly.

Why it matters

Outdoor cats often use flower beds and vegetable patches as toilets, leaving toxoplasma in the soil for months.

The parasite can also cling to unwashed fruit and vegetables — including shop-bought ones.

What to do

  • Wear gloves for gardening and wash your hands afterwards.
  • Wash all fruit and vegetables, including salad, before eating.
  • Cover children’s sandpits when not in use.

Common questions

Can I get toxoplasmosis from vegetables?

Yes, from soil on unwashed produce. Washing, peeling or cooking removes the risk.
